A baby will have three IPV shots within the first 2 years—at 2 months, 4 months, and anytime between 6 to 18 months. A booster shot will be administered when the child is anywhere between 4 to 6 years old. The shots can also be given during the same time as the other vaccines. However, the doctor should be consulted about alternative treatments if the patient is allergic to any IPV component.
Adults are also potential targets for polio, even if they have been inoculated as children. They are still at risk if they've traveled to other locations where the illness is still present, especially if they are health workers treating polio-stricken patients.
Setting yourself up for a polio shot is one way to continue the fight where Salk landed a killer blow. Getting a full set of shots will render you virtually immune.
